The Major League Pickleball Australia Challenger division may be the league’s second tier on paper, but after this week’s mid-season draft, it’s anything but “second best.” With only three rounds remaining and a razor-thin two-point gap separating the top four teams, every signing could be the difference between glory and heartbreak.
Eight Challenger squads took their shot at strengthening their rosters, making calculated picks to address weaknesses, double down on strengths, and gain any edge possible heading into the final stretch.
Key Picks and Bold Strategies
The Eastern Rush wasted no time adding spark, signing Tayah Cross, whose aggressive court coverage and willingness to take risks make her a dangerous wildcard. They’ve also secured Millie Smythe, a versatile player with the ability to adapt quickly to new partnerships, a valuable asset in crunch time.
The Brisbane Breakers loaded up with experience and grit, bringing in Aaron Johnson and Crystal Mildwaters. Johnson’s high energy game pairs perfectly with Mildwaters’ fearless but solid play, giving the Breakers a balanced attack that could make them a dark horse in the finals race.
The Melbourne Mavericks made a single, targeted move with Ayesha Dang, rounding out the all Melbourne squad which could prove crucial in close matches.
The Crocs looked to add flair replacing outgoing pregnant Captain Leona Huynh with Gianni Martine, a player known for creative shot-making and the ability to disrupt opponents’ rhythm, exactly the kind of X-factor that can swing momentum late in the season.
The Sydney Smash brought in Amy Munro, an up-and-coming competitor eager to make an impact and prove she belongs at this level.
The Vipers added Michelle Russ, a steady hand with a reputation for grinding out points and thriving in long rallies, another West Aussie means a lot of training time together which could prove pivotal late in the season.
The Glory signed Jess Christie, bringing both competitive fire and a sharp tactical mind to their campaign. Hot off an alternate position last event this is a great addition to the Gold Coast Squad.
Finally, NZ Hustle added Ryan Simmons, a high-energy player whose aggressive style could lift the entire team’s intensity and be a real difference maker.
The Road Ahead
With just three rounds to play, the Challenger League is set for a blockbuster finish. Only two points separate the top four, meaning one upset, one clutch performance, or one inspired partnership could flip the standings on their head.
The stakes couldn’t be higher, team pride, and personal reputations are all on the line. And with the Queensland Slam in September looming as a potential decider, every rally between now and then will matter.
